Ammochostos - Ayia Napa

Famous for its vibrant nightlife and the golden sandy beaches surrounding the area, the free part of Ammochostos district is one of the reasons for calling Cyprus a paradise on earth.

Ammochostos, also known as Famagusta, is one of the six provinces of the island. It borders to the northwest with Kyrenia province, to the southwest with Larnaca province and to the west with the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia. Nowadays, the estimated population of the non-occupied Famagusta district is around 45.000 citizens.

After the Turkish invasion in 1974, Ammochostos city was greatly influenced. The area was continuously bombarded by the Turkish warplanes and eventually most of its beauty was ruined and the whole town’s development and wealth came to an unexpected end. The town is until today divided into the occupied and non-occupied area with Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot citizens living respectively in the two areas. The old town of Ammochostos is nowadays inhabited by Turkish-Cypriots whereas the new town is known as a “ghost city” with many citizens being still enclaved.

The temporary administrative centre of the Famagusta District is nowadays Paralimni, the largest municipality of the Greek Cypriot-controlled area of the district. It has 4 areas under its jurisdiction, namely the areas of Protaras, Ayia Triada, Kapparis and Pernera. These are the tourist areas which attract a huge number of local and foreign tourists every year. Their brilliant coasts together with their magnificent sandy beached are always ready to welcome anyone who wants to spend moments of relaxation and recreation on the island.

In the non-occupied area of Ammochostos, there are numerous wonderful beaches and uniquely beautiful coastal zones that each visitors should drop by. The famous town of Ayia Napa is a landmark of the particular district, well-known for its magnificent beaches awarded for their cleanliness as well as the facilities they provide visitors with. Nowadays, Ayia Napa has an international reputation as it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

Nissi Beach, Cape Greco, Makronisos Beach, the Sea Caves as well as the famous “Ammos tou Kambouri”, are some of the most popular awarded beaches every visitor should call on.
